Can You Pet A Service Dog Or Not?
Have you ever been out and seen in action a working dog? Oftentimes, as dog lovers, our first instinct to show our admiration and respect is by reaching out and petting these selfless, wonderful animals. We also sometimes praise them verbally. However, that is precisely what we must not do.
Keep in mind that a service dog in leash is on duty and it needs to focus on his or her job.
Below are some tips to help you whenever you encounter this kind of situation:
- Keep in mind that teams of guide dog have always the right of way.
- Do not ask any personal questions about the disability of the handler out of respect for the privacy of the handler.
- Always respect the wishes of the handler. Do not touch the service dog without asking for permission and receiving it first.
- Do not speak to the dog. Speak to the person instead.
- Do not call out or honk to the service dog if you are inside your car.
- Do not ever distract, feed, call, or otherwise pet the service dog. Ask for permission first.
The guide dogs are permitted to go anywhere the public goes by The Federal Americans with Disabilities Act and State Laws. Grocery stores, buses, concerts, hospitals, churches, movie theaters, and much more are included.
Every service dogs deserve our greatest respect. They perform an invaluable service for their handlers or owners. They are not just like your ordinary pet at home.
